Ask DST #294: Muppets, Ghostbusters, Pulp Fiction and More!

It’s time for another Miscellaneous Ask DST with DSTChuck! This week, the president of Diamond Select Toys is fielding questions about Ghostbusters, Muppets, X-Files, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and more – there’s a lot more miscellaneous to come, so submit your own question today!

Ryan D.

Any plans on making any merchandise or action figures based on the IDW Ghostbusters comic? Maquettes or figures based on Dan Shoening's art would amazing!

DSTChuck: Right now our rights are limited to the movies and animation. I do not think we have plans to expand that to the IDW comics at this time.

Harry N.

Hey! First off, I just want to say that I'm super excited for the Muppet Selects line. I had a couple of questions, some of which you may not be able to answer, but I figured it'd never hurt to try!

1. Since the figures are in two-packs, figuring out the scope of the line is a bit difficult. I've heard rumblings that the first wave will have three figures - does this mean six characters broken up into three two-packs?

2. Is the line going to stick entirely to the two-pack format, or is there the chance for larger characters to be released individually? I mean, it wouldn't be the Muppets without the odd giant monster or two.

3. If the Muppets line does well, have you guys considered looking into other things Henson has worked on? The rights situations would be different, but something like Fraggle Rock or Sesame Street would lend itself well to this treatment.

4. This one isn't a Muppets-related question, but have you guys ever considered looking into the license for Eraserhead? There probably isn't enough there for a whole series of figures, but a single Select of Henry with accessories like the baby and one of the goop-spewing chickens would be a dream come true.

Thank you once again for hearing me out! Can't wait to see the prototypes!

  1. For the most part, each two-pack will have two figures and each series of releases will have three two-packs, so that’s 6 characters for each series, but that’s only in general.
  2. Yes there is a chance there could be one-packs, or even three-packs, like Kermit, Bean and Robin, but we’ll have to see.
  3. We have not looked past Muppets, we’ve just started to scratch the surface of that line.
  4. I am sorry, but we are not looking at Eraserhead at this time.

David H.

Hi! I remember hearing news about a 1/15th electronic ecto-1 from ghostbusters. I was wondering if this is still in development and when we might see it at earliest. Thanks! Also is 1/4 star wars a possibility with the new films? A 1/4 boba fett would be awesome! \m/

DSTChuck: Yes, we are still working on the lights and sound Ecto-1. It’s been a long road, for sure. But we no longer have the rights to produce Star Wars figures.

Jason Y.

I really loved how the Mirage comic book style Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles minimates turn out. I'm looking forward for possible future Mirage comics based 4 packs with characters like: Shredder, Oroku Saki civilian look, Splinter, Foot ninja and another Foot ninja. And then April O'Neil, Baxter Stockman, mousers, and even Rat King!

I'm sure there's demand for more Mirage based figures.

ChuckDST: For sure, it’s something we’re keeping an eye on, and we’d like to do more, too.

Michael S.

Any chance of Judge Dredd Minimates? That would really rock my world!

ChuckDST: Sorry, no plans at this time to take on that license.

Chakor C.

I was wondering if Diamond Select has any licenses with MGM. It doesn't look that way from what I've come to research, but there's an awful lot of DST products out there. The reason why I'm asking is because MGM owns the rights to the 1988 horror movie Pumpkinhead. If DST has any licenses with MGM, would there be any chance of seeing a Select-style action figure of the Pumpkinhead movie monster?

Demand for such a thing probably isn't high enough since Pumpkinhead hasn't gained the type of cult following that more popular movies such as Aliens has. The only two companies that have given us figures of the Pumpkinhead monster were McFarlane in their Movie Maniacs series 2 in 1999 and Sota in their "Now Playing" mega scale series in 2006. However, McFarlane has actually managed to beat Sota in regards to articulation with their Pumpkinhead. But, they both still are very lacking in true action figure style articulation and both suffer terrible paint inaccuracies.

Jean St. Jean, sculptor of the Marvel Select Venom and Carnage figures (as well as many more I'm sure), did in fact sculpt the Sota Pumpkinhead, and his sculpt was fantastic. It was just in the hands of a company that didn't care for articulation or movie accurate paint. With the great amount of skill and hard work that Diamond Select has done in these past years, I'm sure if they did a Pumpkinhead movie monster action figure, it would have great articulation, movie accurate paint, and it would probably be interesting for Jean St. Jean to recreate his Pumpkinhead sculpt for the DST Pumpkinhead in a 7" scale. It would also look extremely impressive and fantastic to all Pumpkinhead fans, as well as Stan Winston, designer of the monster himself I'm sure.

PS: Pumpkinhead has returned in three (not very well made) sequels, but they alter the appearance of the monster in each movie. If DST was going to do a Pumpkinhead monster, I'd recommend only using photos of the creature from the 1988 movie for reference, as people will at least recognize the monster's classic appearance and probably wouldn't recognize it's appearance from the Syfy TV sequels at all.

ChuckDST: We have done many MGM properties in the past, however no plans to look at Pumpkinhead at this time.

Mike J.

I enjoy your Dollars Trilogy and BTTF3 Minimates as I enjoy Westerns. Have you thought about doing some more Minimates figures based on Western film and TV shows? There's Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, Alias Smith and Jones, Hell on Wheels, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Wild Wild West, The Searchers, Maverick, Broken Trail, Appaloosa, Cowboys and Aliens and Django Unchained, they're all great Western films and TV shows.

(Massive list redacted by DST)

What do you think?

ChuckDST: While we had lots of fun doing the Eastwood Minimates, and while sales were solid , they were not such that we’d run out and sign all the westerns out there. Doing the Eastwood stuff was more a result of the overreaching deal we reached with MGM.

Rick E.

Hey there, Chuckery! How are things? Alright, a few things about your various Selects...

1) Is the second series of Sin City dead?

2)Likewise for Pulp Fiction?

3) Ditto for Kill Bill?

4) You know X-Files Select need to happen, yes? Yes, you know that...

Thanks, have a good one!

1. Right now Sin City 2 is not in production.

2/3. Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction are moving forward with all the various approvals.

4. As for X-Files, hmm, you might have something there.

Diamond Select Toys Reveals X-Files Toy Plans for 2016

When it comes to unexplained phenomena, Diamond Select Toys knows their stuff – after all, they’ve been turning zombies, aliens, werewolves and vampires into top-notch toys and collectibles for over 15 years! Now, with quintessential conspiracy-theory show The X-Files returning to FOX this January for the first time since 2002, DST is preparing to delve into that mysterious world with Select action figures, Vinimates vinyl figures and Minimates mini-figures!

Diamond Select will release products based on the fan-favorite TV series alongside items from the new 2016 event series. A two-pack of Minimates captures Mulder and Scully in their new looks, as fully poseable 2-inch mini-figures, and is currently available for pre-order through comic shops. Simultaneously, DST is offering a pair of 4-inch Vinimates – static vinyl figures sculpted in the Minimates style – that capture them in their classic appearances. In the future, DST also will release a series of Minimates 4-packs based on the classic series.

On the action figure side, two 7-inch-scale action figures of Mulder and Scully will kick off the X-Files Select line. Initial figures will be based on the new series, but there are plans to expand into the classic series, as well.

“As a longtime fan of the show, I’m very excited to have finally been granted access to the X-Files,” said Diamond Select Toys President Chuck Terceira. “Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are one of the most widely referenced and recognized pairs in pop culture, and the new show has everyone talking about them again. Plus, we have nine seasons’ worth of supporting cast and creatures to play with in our line planning.”

Diamond Select Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1999 by sister company Diamond Comic Distributors to develop new and exciting products for collectors of all ages. Minimates mini-figures first appeared in 2002, and there are currently over 2,400 Minimates, spanning over 60 different licenses.

Marvel Animated Universe Gets New Minimates at Walgreens in 2016!

The Marvel Animated Universe is expanding at Walgreens! With Series 1.5 of Marvel Animated Minimates in stores this holiday season, Diamond Select Toys is ready to reveal Series 2 of the Walgreens-exclusive mini-figure line! The all-new assortment features two-packs from Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, Guardians of the Galaxy and Ultimate Spider-Man, including Super Heroes, villains and even villainous Super Heroes!

Series 2 will include four different two-packs, each containing two 2-inch Minimates mini-figures. The assortment includes:

-          From Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, “Dark Avengers” Thor with his hammer Mjolnir and an alternate helmetless hair piece, and Thanos, the universe-conquering Titan.

-          Also from Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, “Dark Avengers” Iron Man with a removable helmet, and Black Widow with her shock batons.

-          From Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora with her sword and Drax with his knives and baby Groot.

-          From Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, Iron Spider-Man with an interchangeable unmasked head, and Taskmaster with his sword and shield.

Each 2-inch Minimates mini-figure features fully interchangeable parts, so you can trade accessories and create custom looks. Minimates also feature a standard 14 points of articulation, to strike a variety of poses, and each Minimate comes with a clear disc base that pegs into the character’s foot.

Look for Series 2 to arrive in all Walgreens stores in early 2016. Series 1 is in stores now, and Series 1.5 will arrive in December! Find your nearest store and check inventory at!

Ask DST #293: Trekking With the Stars!

It's a new Ask DST, with questions about Diamond Select Toys' Star Trek products being answered by DST's very own captain, DSTChuck! Read on to see what he has to say about DS9, bridge sets, the Enterprise C, Retro figures, phasers and more! Submit your own question via e-mail!

Christopher D.

I actually have several questions.

-          I'd like to get some of the DS9 action figures you guys had put out before, but I fear are out-of-stock. Any chance on re-releasing any of those?

-          Are there any possibilities of other ships from the shows, perhaps like the Enterprise-C (see "Yesterday's Enterprise" - Star Trek TNG), so that those who have all the other Enterprise ships can have a full line collection, as well as like the USS Defiant NX-74205 from DS9, or the USS Voyager NCC-74656, perhaps with moving and light-up warp nacelles?

-          Several years ago, Art Asylum / DST had put out a set for the Enterprise NX-01 bridge set. It comprised of the following: Captain's chair / Jonathan Archer action figure Science console / T'Pol action figure Tactical console / Malcolm Reed action figure Helm console / Travis Mayweather action figure. Sadly, I was only ever able to find Archer's and Reed's sets... Any possibility of seeing the set again?

-          Also, any plans on doing something similar with other ship bridges, perhaps like the Enterprise-D or Enterprise-E, or perhaps one of my favorites, the Wrath of Khan Enterprise bridge, perhaps something akin to the the Enterprise-D bridge playset that was put out many years ago by Playmates (which I don't think you can find anymore without shelling out serious $$$$)? That would serve as a great addition with the Wrath of Khan Enterprise ship, I'd think.

DSTChuck: Thanks for all the interest, Christopher. Right now we have no plans to re-release any of the DS9 figures at this time. We are currently working on two ships, and we have a short list to pick from for the next ship, but we have not decided for sure yet. I see no chance we will go back to the Enterprise bridge set. We did do some Captains with their chairs, and we’re working on another captain’s chair for the Select line, but I do not see us doing a complete build-a-bridge playset.

Rob B.:

was very excited when you announced that you were to continue with your star trek retro figures however an disappointed to see that you are just re releasing existing figures - i was looking forward to seeing something new , more of the next gen crew for example , more mirror mirror characters and , as mentioned by one or two other people , nurse chapel and janice rand - ( you really do need to make the effort with more female characters ) please tell me i can look forward to something new !

DSTChuck: We will be releasing NEW Retro cloth Trek figures in 2016, which were just revealed at NYCC.

Brad T.

Hello, I know that this is frequently asked, but I'm wondering if there is a chance that you will ever release the Enterprise-C. Currently, you can purchase two versions of the original 1701, the refit, two versions of the B, the Enterprise-D, the D's future refit, and the Enterprise-E. Essentially, you can buy every Enterprise in different variations, EXCEPT the Enterprise-C.

DSTChuck: I think the limited screen time is the issue that stands in the way of the C, but if you look at past Q&A’s, you will see which ships we consider the best bets for our next ships.

Hello, my name is Justin; long time fan of your various Star Trek products primarily the ships. I had a suggestion and hopefully you have some info regarding a specific class of Enterprise. In an episode of ST:Enterprise called, "Azati Prime", a futuristic Enterprise can be seen in the background. While it has seen no other screen time, the mere design of it as well as letter class of "J" (my name is Justin) hold a special significance and should be recognized. Will we ever see the Enterprise J: Universe Class? I think it is such a sweet part of Star Trek expanded lore that it should hopefully be looked into as a future product. Please let me know your thoughts!

DSTChuck: Never say never, but no plans at all at this time.

Christoper K.

I apparently missed my opportunity to get a wrath of khan phaser (or the TMP variant which honestly I wanted the most) as they are now out of stock. Will new stocks of either be created, or am I out of luck on those items?
May I also express my excitement at seeing that you are finally going to be offering a next generation phaser! I know customer feedback affects your design choices, so may I also express my hope that a next generation tricorder is on your list as well.
Thank you.

ChuckDST: Generally speaking, we look to re-issue our Trek electronic stuff as long as sales indicates there is demand.

Hey Chuck! I'll make this short and sweet. First off, thank you for responding to my messages in the past. My Question; do you know off hand how many Ezri Dax figures were manufactured? I know they were only issued 1 per case for DS9 Wave 1, but I can't find a number anywhere! Many of your other Chase figures are numbered; but not her. I am now the proud owner of ALL Star Trek figures you've made; looking forward to future Ships and Select figures! Keep up the great work!

ChuckDST : Good question, I would need to go back and check old purchase orders for that. I do not recall if we ever officially gave out those numbers.

Ask DST #292: Minimates Multitudes!

It’s an all-Minimates Ask DST, where Diamond Select Toys president DSTChuck answers your questions about the most popular mini-figure line in the world! Marvel, Kill Bill, Alien, Star Trek, TMNT, Lost in Space and more get the rundown this episode, so read on and submit your own question!

Joey R.

What’s up Chuck! Have a couple questions to ask is there any chance at going for the dragonball license? DBZ is making a big come back it’d be pretty nice if we could get some dbz Minimates. Could we finally get uncanny cyclops, magneto and marvel now Dr.strange or sheriff Dr.strange from secret wars? Is it possible to get the ninja turtle party wagon down the line if it does well? Power rangers? And any chance at going for more video game licenses like metal gear solid, gears of war, god of war or even uncharted?

DSTChuck: Sorry, right now we have no plans to pursue the DBZ or Power Rangers license at this time. I don’t think we’ve decided yet if for sure we will be making more MM based on the Secret Wars story line.

John L.

I don't usually hemorrhage questions so excuse me for a bit:

1) Does the Deadly Assassins 4-pack signal the end of the KILL BILL line of Minimates or do you think you can squeak out one more set? Maybe variants of key characters in less bloody outfits.

2) Now that Punisher and Elektra are slated to appear on Netflix's DAREDEVIL, is there any chance you might offer 4-packs from that Marvel show?

3) Have you considered offering GODZILLA Minimates at a deluxe price point for popular characters like Ghidorah that require even more extensive sculpting?

4) Be honest: Are LOST IS SPACE Minimates dead? Should I stop holding out hope for a 4- or 5-pack featuring the rest of the cast?

5) Since even crappy movies can yield great toys, will you be offering Minimates based on ALIEN3 and ALIEN: RESURRECTION?

6) Will iZOMBIE Select figures give way to Minimates as well? And could that lead to other CW series like ARROW and THE FLASH?

7) Will we see any new Minimates at NYCC this year?

8) Do you have anything planned for the 50th anniversary of STAR TREK in terms of Minimates for 2016?

Thanks for your indulgence. If you make any TMNT Minimates from the live-action movies, I'm all in. Keep up the good work!

DSTChuck: No problem John I’ll do the best I can for you.

  1. I think for now our Kill Bill line is completed, but never say never.
  2. We still have no plans right now to produce products based on the Netflix shows, but the situation continues to evolve.
  3. Right now the Godzilla line has as much or more new sculpting than any line we have done in the past. With all that, though, we have no plans to charge more for this line.
  4. We do not have plans at this moment for more LiS sets, but for sure never say never.
  5. We have not ruled out any of the Aliens movies, so if the line keeps selling we’ll do anything.
  6. We do not have plans at this moment for iZombie Minimates, but for sure it’s something we’re keeping a close eye on.
  7. By now, you've probably seen all the new stuff we had there!
  8. We have looked at Trek MM for the 50th and run some ideas around, but nothing is settled yet.

Hi Chuck! I know you have already stated that we will not be getting anything from the Deadpool movie (for which I am very saddened) but do you think you could try to release a comic tie in wave/4-pack like you did with Winter Soldier? Maybe with a Blind Al (using the newest Jubilee hairpeice), Ajax, Weasel, maybe even Bob (agent of HYRDA) Thanks and keep up the good work :)

DSTChuck: I would think you will see some sort of Deadpool MM from us within the next year.

Matt K.

Hello DST!! I was looking at a few of my Minimates today (mainly the ones with masks.) I was wondering if you guys were going to be making anymore hanging mask pieces for future heroes and villains like you did for Wolverine in toys r us series 9 or wave 47?

DSTChuck: Matt, we don’t have any planned, but I don’t think we’ve shut the door on it or anything.

Chris P.

We've gotten some pretty cool "action effects" accessories, like Thor's spinning hammer, Gambit's throwing cards and most recently Michaelangelo's spinning nunchuks as well as various energy effects, flame blasts and flying figure stands. These accessories allow for some very fun and dynamic posing and displays. Will we see more of these in the future? Things like a slicing katana for Leonardo and a "swooshing" effect for throwing Captain America's shield would be awesome.

DSTChuck: I think the response to the Thor hammer on the Minimate and the Select has really resonated with fans, so we might look at it, or try and think in those terms when it makes sense. The bases, I think we started that some time ago, so there is no real change there.

Lance C.

First off, thank you for producing such amazing Ninja Turtles Minimates and accessories from wave 2. Accessories are some we have never seen in any toy line. You guys really knocked it out of the park, can't wait for series 3, Slash, Bebop and especially Rocksteady look amazing! Are there plans to continue the TMNT line beyond wave 3? I have been collecting Minimates for several years now with well over 400 individually different Minimates. The main theme I focus on is Marvel Minimates. Myself and collectors have been wondering for a long time if you plan on coming out with more Inhumans? We are missing key characters from this team, characters such as Medusa, Triton, Gordon and Karnak. If you made these 4 in a box set it would be greatly sought after and sell well, from how much in demand these characters are. The New Avengers are characters that are making a lot of appearances in comics and video games these days. Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel being one of them is an amazing character and would look so great as a Minimate. Any possibility of getting her in the future to go with her already made/announced teammates of Captain America Sam Wilson, Vison, Sam Alexander Nova and Jane Foster's Thor? Please please make her a Minimate You won't regret it and she herself is an Inhuman. Next year is Captain America Civil War so I am guessing you will be having Minimates for that movie? The Age of Ultron Minimates are great and you gave us so many characters from that movie thank you. Super excited for the Marvel Axis wave. Blazing skull has been making more appearances lately in the comics any chance he will become a Minimate? Well this letter has become long enough so I will leave you with my top three Minimates wish list, Toad, Spider-Hulk and Fin Fang Foom and commend you for continuing the trend of making epic Minimates in each theme you do.

DSTChuck: I don’t see us stopping TMNT at Series 3. As for Marvel, I think we always have fans that want collector stuff, classic stuff and movie stuff, I really can’t say which ones we’ll focus on. We have maybe half of 2016 planned out so far, but for the comic stuff we try and wait as long as we can if we’re going to focus on current stuff.

Garfield A.

So, with Gotham now on the table, is DC back or JUST Gotham? Either way you can still make Poison Ivy and I heard Mr. Freeze is supposed to be appearing? *hint hint* Also, from Marvel can we get an A-Bomb and Devil Dinosaur Minimate sometime? Maybe Caiera, the Red King? Oh and PLEASE is Man-spider possible? You guys love Spidey-mates, why not do a Spider-verse boxset? Man-Spider, Spider-Man Noir, Silk, Spider-Ham? There are a lot of cool spider heroes not made into Minimates yet. If 2017 isn't planned yet, how about Blackheart? Mistress Death? Madame Mask or the most intimidating, most terrifying, the one Iron Man villain that gives us all nightmares... The Unicorn. Thank you for reading!

DSTChuck: DC Gotham and DC comic are not related in any way. Even our deals within Warner TV like iZombie and Gotham are separate deals. I think we do try and mix in characters that have maybe not as wide an appeal as, say, Spider-Man, but we’re not able to make it a focus.

Joe G.

Any plans to make Minimates on the Telltale Walking Dead games?

DSTChuck: No sorry, for now we’re sticking just to the comic-based stuff.

Justin H.

Hi Chuck, I'm writing to ask that you please release another run of the Minimates Collector Case, the 10th Anniversary edition is long sold out, and I need more cases to store my collection! Also, a few members of the MMMV have also stated it would be nice if some of the compartments were bigger to accommodate some of the larger Minimates and accessories we have been getting lately. Maybe it's time for a new design, a three level case with the new level containing the bigger compartments? Thanks, Justin

DSTChuck: That’s a good suggestion. Maybe I can get a peek at that and see if it would make sense.

Justin H.

Hi Chuck, I am writing to ask that you please consider a new wave of Minimates dedicated to comic book Iron Man and his supporting characters and villains.  There are still many iconic characters from the Iron Man corner of the Marvel Universe that could make great colorful 'mates:

Iron Monger
Madame Masque
Fine Fang Foom
Grey Gargoyle
The Unicorn

Plus, a comic Iron Man wave would be a great way to reintroduce one of the most demanded Minimates army builders: A.I.M. Soldiers! I love specific character themed waves of Minimates, while event themed waves like Axis and Secret Wars are fun, dedicated character waves allows DST to dig a little deeper into the mythos. Please consider this, as despite Iron Man being a blockbuster film character, his Minimates Rogue's Gallery and supporting characters really could use a boost. Thanks, Justin

DSTChuck: I think it’s amazing that we have been doing this for so long, and there are so many characters fans really want that would make sense to make. I could never have imagined we’d have a run this long and still have so much cool stuff we could do.
