Invincible: The Story Behind the Show

Skybound Entertainment’s Invincible

Amazon Prime’s newest animated series is creating quite a buzz for fans of superhero comics. The show is inspired by the comics created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, first published in 2003 under Image Comics. The series features Mark Grayson as he navigates his young adult life with new extraterrestrial superpowers, ones he uses to help protect the Earth as Invincible alongside his father, Omni-Man. The main characters are voiced by a pair of geek-famous actors, J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man) and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead)! Other voices in the series include Seth Rogen, Mahershala Ali, Zachary Quinto, Sandra Oh and Mark Hamill!

Main Characters

Mark Grayson (Invincible)- Those who are fans of young superheroes like Peter Parker, Miles Morales and Tim Drake will definitely fall for heartthrob Invincible! Mark is half-Viltrumite and half-human, but that doesn’t stop him from developing the powers of his father’s race. This teenage superhero lives a double life as he struggles to balance the hardships of high school and college while holding the responsibility of Earth’s safety on his shoulders.

Nolan Grayson (Omni-Man)- Travelling to Earth as a representative of the Viltrumite people, Nolan becomes a novelist, marries Deborah Grayson, and has a family. He protects humanity from earthbound and extraterrestrial threats while helping their son learn to control his newfound powers.

The Invincible Comic Universe

While we don’t know what will happen in the Invincible animated series, we do know what happens in the comic book, and it’s not good for Mark Grayson. (Spoilers ahead!) Soon after he gains his powers, Mark joins up with the Teen Team, a group of young heroes -- including one who attends his high school! But soon he discovers that his father is not a protector from a peace-loving Viltrum, but an advance scout of the merciless Viltrum Empire, which aims to conquer and colonize all neighboring planets using their superhuman strength, endurance, speed, and stamina. Wiping out other heroes who might stand in the Viltrumites’ way, Omni-Man is confronted by his son, leading to the mother of all beat-downs.
